Chapter 20
After a wildly eventful day, I was thrilled to head over to Emily's house for dinner. It meant a delicious home-cooked meal that would be a million times tastier than one of my usual frozen dinners or boxes of mac and cheese. Plus, a visit to my sister's house would give me some much needed therapeutic time with all my fuzzy farm friends.
I brought my usual contributionâa bottle of wine. Emily popped open the back door as she spotted me walking up the path. "Nick is just feeding the goats, then we can serve dinner." Emily's golden blonde hair was tucked under a pink headscarf. She was wearing a new red checked apron that made her creamy complexion look even brighter than it already was.
"I suppose I should wait for my goat snuggles. They both get sort of grumpy if I try and cuddle them while they're eating." I handed her the bottle of wine and swept past her into the house. I lifted my nose for a good whiff. "Can't tell what it is but it smells so good, my mouth is watering."
Emily followed behind. "I invented a new recipe for an artichoke and gouda cheese quiche. That's one of the reasons I invited you tonight. I want you to try it. I think it will make a good addition to the Cider Ridge Inn menu."
"That sounds divine," I said. "Can't wait to sink my teeth into it." I sat at the table with a loud, tired groan.
"Long day?" Emily asked as she searched in a drawer for the corkscrew.
The back door opened before I could dive in to my long, exhausting tale.
"Hey, it's the illustrious owner of the Cider Ridge Inn." Nick tromped into the kitchen smelling like a bale of fresh alfalfa. "Everyone is fed and bedded down for the night. Although, they are all expecting a good night hug from Auntie Sunni."
"They better be," I said as I plucked the glass of wine from Emily's hand. "Boy, do I need a sip of this, tonight. What a day."
Nick grabbed a cold bottle of iced tea from the fridge and sat down across from me. "Are you on a hot story?" he asked.
"I was on a sort of mundane assignment, but it quickly turned, as you say, hot. Or maybe deadly would be a better word."
That pulled Emily's attention away from the salad she was tossing. "Deadly? Were you in danger?"
I sipped some wine and put down the glass. "No, not me. Parker sent me out to cover a long standing feud between two farmers out near Hickory Flats. The whole thing is about water rights."
Nick swallowed his mouthful of tea. "The Plunketts and the Carmichaels?"
"Yes. You know about the feud?" I asked. "Of course you do. You have infinite knowledge."
Nick plucked a piece of alfalfa off his shirt and tossed it on the floor. Emily caught him and tilted her head in dismay.
I sat forward. "Don't stop him now for a lecture. I want to hear what he has to say about the feud.
